Gold Logie Award for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television

The Gold Logie Award

The Gold Logie Award has been awarded annually to the Most Popular Personality on Australian Television at the TV Week Logie Awards since 1960. Even though it is determined by popular vote, it is considered by some the most prestigious award in the Australian television industry.

This article does not include:

  • special Gold Logies or
  • the "TV Week Awards' Star of the Year" award at the inaugural presentation in 1959. This was won by Graham Kennedy, who coined the name "Logie Award" the following year, and it is sometimes counted as a Gold Logie equivalent.
  • Gold Logies awarded to inductees into the TV Week Logies' Hall of Fame (since 1984)

Although there have been 53 awards nights, a total of 59 Gold Logies have been won as two Gold Logies, for male and female, were awarded in 1967, 1970, 1971, 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1977.

Of the 59 Gold Logies, the winner has come from:

Winners in consecutive years

Winner in consecutive years were:

  • 1970 and 1971: Maggie Tabberer
  • 1971 and 1972: Gerard Kennedy
  • 1975 and 1976: Denise Drysdale
  • 1981 and 1982: Bert Newton (he also won in 1979 and 1984)
  • 1993 to 1996: Ray Martin (4 consecutive awards; he also won in 1987)
  • 1997 to 2000: Lisa McCune (4 consecutive awards)
  • 2001 and 2002: Georgie Parker
  • 2003 to 2005: Rove McManus (3 consecutive awards)
  • 2007 and 2008: Kate Ritchie

Although Graham Kennedy won a total of 5 Gold Logies, none were in consecutive years, whereas 4 of Ray Martin's 5 awards were in consecutive years. By the time Kennedy had won his final Gold Logie (1978), nobody else had won any more than 2, and none of the people who came closest to his tally had won any awards at all.

1950s

1st Annual TV Week Logie Awards, 1959

The Logies as such did not commence until 1960, and thus no Gold Logie was given at the inaugural awards presentation in 1959. However Graham Kennedy won the "TV Week Awards' Star Of The Year" in 1959, and this is sometimes considered to be equivalent to a Gold Logie.
