Brady is a city in McCulloch County,
Texas, United States, and is the closest city to the geographical center of the state. Brady refers to itself as "The Heart of Texas". The population was 5,523 at the 2000 census. It is the county seatof McCulloch CountyGR|6.
Brady is located at coor dms|31|7|56|N|99|20|29|W|city (31.132252, -99.341255)GR|1.
According to the
United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.5 square miles (29.8 km²), of which, 9.2 square miles (23.8 km²) of it is land and 2.3 square miles (6.0 km²) of it (20.16%) is water.
As of the
censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 5,523 people, 2,181 households, and 1,448 families residing in the city. The population densitywas 601.1 people per square mile (232.0/km²). There were 2,603 housing units at an average density of 283.3/sq mi (109.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 81.41% White, 2.17% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 14.20% from other races, and 1.90% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 32.68% of the population.
There were 2,181 households out of which 32.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% were non-families. 31.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.11.
In the city the population was spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 85.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $22,961, and the median income for a family was $28,701. Males had a median income of $25,498 versus $17,289 for females. The
per capita incomefor the city was $12,607. About 18.7% of families and 23.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.7% of those under age 18 and 22.1% of those age 65 or over.
Children in Brady attend Brady ISD schools. There are approximately 1,300 students attending Brady ISD. Northward Elementary consists of grades Pre-k and Kindergarten and the principal is Jenny Roberts. Brady Elementary consists of grades 1-5 and the principal is Kelley Hirt. Brady Middle School consists of grades 6-8 with Eric Bierman as principal. Brady High School consists of grades 9-12 with Hector Martinez as principal. Other central office staff includes Steve McCarn as Superintendent and Liesa Land as Assistant Superintendent. The coordinator for the ESL program is Mary Ann Gutierrez.
