A Blizzard Warning is an advisory issued by the
National Weather Serviceof the United Stateswhich means winds of 35 mph (56 km/h) or greater, mixed with heavy snow is forecast for a period of 3 hours or more. A blizzardtends to reduce visibilities to 1/4 of a mile (400 m) or less. In most cases temperatures below 20°F is an additional criteria for blizzard classification. A Severe Blizzard Warning is a variety issued is some cases of winds above 45 mph/72 km/h and temperatures below 10°F/-12°C. Many local weather offices will activate the Emergency Alert Systemand broadcast the alarm tone on relevant NOAA Weather Radio stations for both varieties of warning.
