A premium fare is a premium fare on a public transport service.
Typically such fares are set at around ten percent above the fare normally applying on that route or another route offered by alternative service; such fares might be levied at times where traffic-levels would otherwise be unbearably high.
If the fare level deters some passengers this might reduce vandalism and maintenance costs and minimise the dwell-times required. Many premium fare operations are found in non-stop (light) railway links and as such can abstract capacity from a railway line also used by slower services.
