Jhonghe (zh-cht|c=中和市|hp=Zhōnghé Shì|tp=Jhonghé Shìh, Unicode|Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tiong-hô Chhī), historically spelled Chung-Ho, is a county-controlled city in Taipei County, Taiwan. Due to cheaper housing and good transport links, Jhonghe is a major satellite city of Taipei.

Geography and Climate

Jhonghe lies just south-west of Taipei City and shares borders with Banciao, Taipei City, Sindian, Tucheng and Yonghe. The average annual temperature is 21.7 °C and the precipitation averages 2,111mm per year. The pacific typhoon season occurs between June and October.

History

The present-day area of Jhonghe City was originally settled by aboriginal tribes. During conflict between the colonial forces of the Dutch and the Spanish, the area is recorded by the Dutch as Chiron, from the name of one of the tribes living there. [cite book|title=諸羅縣志 (Zhu-Luo County Annals)] This name is preserved in on of the constituent villages of the city, called Xiulang Li (秀朗里), and the bridge which connects Jhonghe to Sindian City.

The area was subsequently settled by Han migrants from Fujian but remained relatively unimportant until the end of the Second World War. In 1946 the population of the area of present-day Jhonghe and Yonghe was 30,000 and it was classified as a "Xiang" (鄉; rural township). [cite web|url=http://www.junghe.tpc.gov.tw/History.aspx|title=History|publisher=Jhonghe City Government|accessdate=2008-07-18]

Due to rapid population growth Yonghe was separated from Jhonghe in 1958. Subsequently on January 1, 1979 Jhonghe was upgraded to county-controlled city status after reaching a population of 170,000. Administrative Divisions

Jhonghe is divided into 93 "lǐ" (里; villages), which are further subdivided into "lín" (鄰; neighbourhoods), of which there are 2,972 in total. Some administration is shared with neighbouring Yonghe City; due to both this and their proximity, they are sometimes collectively known as Shuanghe (雙和; literally "Twin "He", because both cities feature the character 和 (hé) in their names).

Transportation

Jhonghe is served by the Zhonghe Line of the Taipei Rapid Transit System, of which three stations are located in the city: Yongan Market, Jingan and the terminal station, Nanshijiao. In addition, National Highway No. 3 passes through Jhonghe and has an interchange there, as does the Provincial Highway No. 64.

Four major bridges connect Jhonghe with other areas:
*Huazhong Bridge (華中橋) - Wanhua district, Taipei City
*Xiulang Bridge (秀郎橋) - Sindian, Taipei County
*Fuhe Bridge (福和橋) - the Gongguan area of Da'an District, Taipei City
*Yongfu Bridge (永福橋) - Gongguan, Da'an District, Taipei City

Education

Jhonghe is home to the National Taiwan Library, which is located in the grounds of the 8-23 Memorial Park. It has one of the best collections in Taiwan of factual books about Taiwan in English.

There are nine Elementary Schools, four Junior High Schools, One Senior High School and three private High Schools in Jhonghe. The Hwa Hsia Institute of Technology is also located in the city.

Economy

The offices of a number of technology companies are located in the city, including the Asia-Pacific head office of Viewsonic [cite web|url=http://www.viewsonic.com/contactus/locations.htm|title=Locations|publisher=Viewsonic|accessdate=2008-07-27] , a Texas Instruments research facility [cite web|url=http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/gencontent.tsp?contentId=29893|title=TI Worldwide Sales & Support Offices|publisher=Texas Instruments|accessdate=2008-07-27] and the head offices of Cooler Master [cite web|url=http://www.coolermaster.com/contactus/contactus.php?language=en&id=5#tw|title=Contact Us|publisher=Cooler Master|accessdate=2008-08-09] and Micro-Star International. Burma Street

Huaxin Street (華新街), near Nanshijiao MRT Station, is home to a large proportion of Taiwan's small Burmese immigrant population. Consequently there are numerous stores and restaurants in this area selling Burmese produce and there are also cultural events on occasion.
