Kim Woo Gray was principal when the school opened in 1992 until her retirement in 2008. CMA has twenty-three full time staff and 512 students. CMA is one of four magnet schools in Detroit, others being (Renaissance High School, Cass Technical High School and Detroit School of Arts).
The school
CMA is a highly successful "college" preparatory school.
97% of the class of 2006 graduated on time. 95% went to either a full time college or a trade school, 5% went to the military. The girls volleyball team has won the city championship. The DPS Board of Education has unsuccessfully attempted to close CMA three times.

CMA has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation’s best high schools.
