The Kuroshio (Japanese for "Black Tide") is a strong

It begins off the east coast ofTaiwan and flows northeastward pastJapan , where it merges with the easterly drift of theNorth Pacific Current . It is analogous to theGulf Stream in theAtlantic Ocean , transporting warm, tropical water northward towards thepolar region . It's also sometimes known as the "Black Stream"—the English translation of "kuroshio", and an allusion to the deep blue of its water—and also as the "Japan Current".Its counterparts are the
North Pacific Current to the north, theCalifornia Current to the east, and theNorth Equatorial Current to the south. There is a high concentration of uranium passing through the current every year (about 5.2 million tons).
