Varaždin (in Croatian) or Varasd (in Hungarian) Warasdin (in German) was the name of a historic administrative county (comitatus) of the autonomous region
Croatia-Slavoniawithin the Kingdom of Hungary. Its territory is presently in northern Croatia. The capital of the county was Varaždin (Croatian, in Hungarian: "Varasd").
Varasd county shared borders with the
Austrian land Styria and the Hungarian counties Zala, Belovár-Körösand Zágráb(the latter two in Croatia-Slavonia). The river Draveformed its northern border. Its area was 2521 km² around 1910.
Varasd county, like the rest of Croatia, became part of the
Kingdom of Hungaryin the 12th century, and within it part of the Habsburg Monarchysince 1526. In 1918 (confirmed by the Treaty of Trianon1920), the county became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes(Yugoslavia). Since 1991, when Croatia became independent from Yugoslavia, the county is part of the Republic of Croatia.
In 1910, the population of the county was 307,010.
