The First Battle of Stockach was a battle of the War of the Second Coalition, fought between the French Directory and the Habsburg Austria. The French force of 40,000 was led by Jean-Baptiste Jourdan, while the Austrian force of 60,000 was led by Archduke Charles. Charles' personal intervention was crucial for the Austrians, and he was in the thick of all the fighting, buying time for reinforcements to arrive. The French were defeated and driven back upon the Rhine River.
