The United States women's national basketball team are the defending Olympic champions in women's basketball. The team is composed of some of the top American players in the WNBA and the women's college game.

The team has won six Olympic gold medals and seven FIBA world championships, and did not lose an international match between 1994 and 2006. However, longtime leaders Dawn Staley, Lisa Leslie, and Teresa Edwards being absent, they lost to Russia in the semifinal of the 2006 world championship, settling for the bronze.

In addition, the US team won silver medals at the 1976 Olympics and 1983 world championship, and bronze medals at the 1992 Olympics and 1994 and 2006 world championship.US also won the Gold Medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics
