William Montague Browne (
July 7 1827– April 28 1883) was a prominent Confederate politician, as well as a general in the Confederate States Armyduring the American Civil War.
Browne was born in
Dublin, County Mayo, Ireland, and served in the British Armyduring the Crimean War. He later emigrated to the southern United States.
After the war, Browne was an attorney and was a professor of History and Constitutional Law at the
University of Georgia. He died in Athens, Georgiaand was buried in its Oconee Hill Cemetery.
