Miami International Airport
Arrow Air is an American
cargo airlinebased in Miami, Florida, USA. It operates over 90 weekly scheduled cargo flights, and has a strong charter business. Its main base is Miami International Airport.cite news | title= Directory: World Airlines | work= Flight International| page= 77 | date= 2007-03-27]
The airline was established in 1947 as an all-cargo operator. Passenger services were adopted by the late 1970s and early 1980s, both on a charter and regular scheduled service basis. Arrow Air had many passenger flights from
JFK International Airportin New York and from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airportin San Juan at the time, using Lockheed L-1011as well as McDonnell Douglas DC-10and DC-8equipment. During the 1990s, Arrow Air's management decided to return the airline to being an all-cargo operator once again.Fact|date=April 2007
Formerly a subsidiary of International Air Leases, Air Arrow was acquired by
Fine Airin 1999, but it remained flying under the name Arrow Air. Fine Air also still operates under its own name. In January 2004 Arrow Air filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, but exited in June 2004 after a bankruptcy court approved its restructuring.
Arrow Cargo's Strategic Alliance
2008, Arrow was very pleased to announce that they had entered into a strategic alliance with MatlinPatterson, a global private equityfund in partial control of the Brazilian company Varig Logand who also are in full ownership control of Global Aero Logistics, a U.S. airline holding conglomeration of airline companies. Matlin Patterson will partner with Arrow for future growth and development.
They said that during the next few months, there would be many positive changes in the company including additional financial, technological and human resources as well as new policies and procedures to enable Arrow Cargo to achieve financial stability and customer excellence. At that time there were rumors that there would be a merger, and Arrow would receive.
Incidents & accidents
December 12, 1985: an Arrow Air Flight 1285, a DC-8carrying American military personnel on a charter flight home for Christmascrashed in Newfoundland, killing all 248 passengers on board and 8 crew members. See: Arrow Air Flight 1285.
December 13, 2002, a McDonnell DouglasDC-8-62F operated by Arrow Air flying from Yokotawas approaching runway 20R at Singapore Changi Airport. Due to a miscommunication between the First Officerand Captain during landing, when the aircrafttouched down only about 1,500 m of the runwayremained available. The aircraftoverran the runway and came to rest about 300 m from its end.
June 4, 2006: A McDonnell Douglas DC10-10F(registered N68047) en route Miami-Managua touched down fast at Managuaand was unable to stop before the end of the runway. The aircraft overran by about 300 meters, the nose gear collapsed, causing substantial damage to the wing engines as well as a fuel rupture in the wing.
