David Held

David Held is a British political theorist active in the field of international relations. He will be chair of politics and international relations at Durham University from January 2012 and is currently Graham Wallas Professor of Political Science and co-director of the Centre for the Study of Global Governance at the London School of Economics.[1] Together with Daniele Archibugi, he has been prominent in the development of cosmopolitanism, and of cosmopolitan democracy in particular. He has been an active scholar on issues of globalisation and global governance.

David Held was born in Britain where he spent most of his childhood. He was educated in Britain, France, Germany and the United States. He has held numerous Visiting Appointments in the United States, Australia, Canada and Spain, among other places. In the last five years he has lectured regularly on questions of democracy, global governance and globalization.

David Held co-founded Polity press in 1984, which has become a leading publisher in the social sciences and humanities.

Starting from academic year 2010/11, he will teach in the first English taught Master Degree Course in International Relations at Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli in Rome, where he is also member of the Advisory Group at their School of Government.[2]

From January 2012 he is to take on the role of Master at University College, Durham, alongside lecturing in the politics department of Durham University.[3]

Links to Libya

In March, 2011, Held's name came to be associated with the LSE Libya Links scandal. Held was an advisor of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who received his PhD from LSE in 2008.[4] According to the Wall Street Journal, in 2009, Professor Held introduced Saif at lecture at the LSE as "someone who looks to democracy, civil society and deep liberal values for the core of his inspiration." As early as 2009, a watchdog organization reported that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi had hired the services of the Monitor Group, a Boston-based consulting company that includes at least two well-known former British spies among its ranks, to conduct interviews required for his thesis.[5] It has also been revealed that the LSE accepted a donation of 1.5 million pounds from the NGO of Saif Gaddafi.[6] David Held issued a personal statement in reaction to the allegations, saying that "in many discussions and meetings I encouraged the development of [Gaddafi's] reform agenda and subsequently sought to support it through research on the North Africa Programme funded by the Gaddafi International Charity and Development Foundation" at the LSE.[7]

In October 2011 Held resigned from his post at the LSE in advance of the publication an independent report into the LSE's links with Libya.[8]
