Center School (Brookfield, Connecticut)

Center School is an elementary school in Brookfield, Connecticut.

History

What is now Center School was originally established in 1938 as the "Consolidated School". Consolidated was the unification of five one-room schoolhouses scattered throughout the town, created as a means to provide improved and centralized facilities for education. Later, in 1964, a second elementary school opened in Brookfield and what was then Expanded Consolidated School was renamed to Center School, as it is now known.

The original Center School opened several decades prior, in 1762, and was the first one-room school house in Brookfield. The facilities later served as the town hall and is now a historical building rented to the Housatonic Council of Elected Officials. Present day

As of 2006, Center enrolls approximately 450 students in kindergarten through first grade, with 22 classrooms and 32 teachers. There is also an on-site pre-school service. The school principal is June F. Gordon. Approximately 93% of all students are Caucasian, in contrast to the state average of 69%. The remainder of students are African American (4%), Hispanic (1%), and Asian/Pacific Islander (1%).
