The National Association for Business Economics (NABE) is the largest international association of applied economists, strategists, academics, and policy-makers committed to the application of economics.[1] Founded in 1959, it is one of the member organizations of the Allied Social Sciences Association. According to the association's website, "NABE's mission is to provide leadership in the use and understanding of economics."[2].

The association's membership is divided into ten subject-oriented subdivisions or roundtables: Corporate Planning, Financial, Health Economics, International, Manufacturing, Real Estate/Construction, Regional/Utility, Small Business/Entrepreneurship, Technology, and Transfer Pricing. Each division is referred to as a "Roundtable" and conducts 3-4 webinars and two sessions at NABE meetings each year.[3] NABE also has local and student chapters[4] in many cities and much of the United States.[5]

The NABE president for 2011-2012 is Dr. Gene Huang, vice president and chief economist of FedEx. Past presidents of the NABE include former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Alan Greenspan.

NABE Annual Meeting
For over 50 years, the nation’s top business economists have gathered at the NABE Annual Meeting to debate and discuss the economic trends impacting their companies and their outlook for the global and U.S. economies. The NABE Annual Meeting features prominent speakers, lively panel discussions, enlightening educational sessions, and ample networking opportunities. In addition to NABE Members and those in related fields, the NABE Annual Meeting regularly attracts business leaders, government officials, analysts, investors, and scores of members of the business media.

Economic Policy Conference
NABE’s Economic Policy Conference, held annually in the spring in Washington, DC, focuses on the one seemingly-unpredictable variable that regularly confounds many economists and their models: economic policy. A unique opportunity for business economists and those who use economics in the workplace to glean insight from and network with economic policymakers and policy analysts, the NABE Economic Policy Conference has become the premier national event addressing the nexus of economics, business, and policymaking. Speakers at the Economic Policy Conference have included leaders from the Federal Reserve Board, Treasury Department, Congressional Budget Office, FDIC, and other government agencies, in addition to top analysts at think tanks and other institutions.

Each of the ten NABE Roundtables conducts regular webinars and teleconferences on timely economics topics within its area of interest. These sessions are available to both members and non-members. For a list of upcoming roundtable events, check the NABE web site.

Business Economics
Business Economics, NABE's quarterly journal, serves as an essential resource and provides practical information for people who apply economics in the workplace. It is the leading forum for debating solutions to critical business problems, analyzing key business and economic issues, and sharing of best-practice models, tools, and hands-on techniques from practitioners in the field of economics.

NABE News is a vital membership communication vehicle providing topical information on NABE's activities and members. Each quarter, NABE News answers questions like Who has recently joined NABE? What is the state of funding for the federal statistical agencies? Which NABE Members have recently changed jobs or been promoted? What happened at the most recent NABE conference?

NABE NewsDigest
NABE NewsDigest is a weekly e-newsletter which combines the most recent NABE and NABE Foundation updates with real-time business economics content. NABE NewsDigest pulls from hundreds of blogs, working papers, and op-ed pages to deliver the latest business economics news, information and research to your inbox each week.

NABE Surveys
NABE regularly conducts three surveys of its membership: the Outlook Survey, the Industry Survey, and the Economic Policy Survey. The results of these surveys are greatly anticipated and frequently impact market trading, receiving excellent media coverage and wide use by economists, analysts, investors, and policymakers. As a NABE member, you receive complimentary access to all three survey reports. The NABE Outlook Survey, the most well-known of the NABE surveys, provides the consensus forecast of NABE’s professional economic forecasters.

Education and Career Development
Certificate in Economic Measurement
Data are the raw materials economists use to make sense of the economy through modeling and other forms of analysis. Despite the critical importance of data to economists and analysts, most academic programs spend little time instructing on the topics of where to find and how to use economic data. NABE’s Certificate in Economic Measurement fills in the gaps left by these academic programs.

Econometrics Certificate Programs
Offered twice yearly at Federal Reserve Banks, NABE's Econometrics Seminars are among its most popular offerings. Each Summer, NABE offers the certificate in Applied Econometrics, and each Fall, the certificate in Time-Series Analysis and Forecasting.
NABE's career site,, caters only to those seeking a job or an employee in the field of economics.

Journal Publication

NABE is the publisher of Business Economics, a scholarly journal that covers different aspects of applied economics and is published quarterly.[6]

Adam Smith Award

Since 1982, NABE has awarded the Adam Smith Award to prominent economists and policy makers that have contributed to business economics. Just some of the recipients of the award include, Vice Chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System Janet Yellen in 2010,[7], former Director of the National Economic Council Lawrence Summers in 2009, Chief Executive of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis William Poole in 2006, Professor of Economics at Princeton University Paul Krugman in 1995, and influential economist and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics Milton Friedman in 1989.[8]
