Double Dhamaal is a 2011 Bollywood comedy film and a sequel to the 2007 film Dhamaal. The project stars most of the actors from the original, with new additions including Mallika Sherawat, Kangna Ranaut, Satish Kaushik and Zakir Hussain. It is directed by Indra Kumar and produced by Ashok Thakeria. It was released on 24 June 2011.[3] The theatrical trailer of the film was revealed on 20 May 2011 along with the film Haunted.

A third installment to the trilogy was announced at the end of the film under the title of Total Dhamaal.[4]

The film continues-on with the story of Dhamaal, as the four good-for-nothing jokers, Roy (Ritesh Deshmukh), Adi (Arshad Warsi), Manav (Jaaved Jaaferi) and Boman (Aashish Chaudhary) are still dreaming a rich life with money for doing absolutely nothing! They earn some hard-cash by fooling people. When they get caught, and chased into the main-road, where they witness their old-arch enemy Kabir (Sanjay Dutt) who is no longer a cop, but a millionaire with a beautiful wife Kamini (Mallika Sherawat) and lovely sister Kiya (Kangana Ranaut). The four friends sneak into Kabir's bungalow, and witness him talking to another women on the phone, and by using Kabir's iPhone, they record it and start blackmailing him into becoming his partners. But it turns out, Kabir, Kiya and Kamini are planning to con the four jokers and leave the state. In order to get half of the money in Kabir's business, the four friends find an investor, Batabhai (Satish Kaushik) who lends them money, but they get a shock only find out Kabir and his agendas have looted the money and flee.

Now Bata is also after them. Incidently, with the help of another gangster, Mohsin Bhai (Zakir Hussain) they also flee to Macau, where they see Kabir, Kamini and Kiya living in a lavish villa, driving a Chrysler 300C/Limo, and created their own casino titled "The Four Jokers". They then make a plan to get-up in different disguises and get their money back. They impersonate Ghanta Singh, Lee, Heera Bhai, Jojo, Dodo, Barbara Gori, Tukya Kaale, and even a Gorilla. After all their shenanigans are over, Kiya and Kamini have already left Kabir according to their plan. They then get Kabir drunk and reveal everything they were doing, until the lights go off and on a projector plays a video showing the four stealing the money. Confused, the four wonder who taped it, if Kamini and Kiya left, and Kabir was drunk, who would it be?

Then, its revealed that it was Kabir, Kamini, Kiya, Mohsin Bhai and even Batabhai involved in Kabir's plan. Kabir then takes his money back, and calls King of Casino Johnny Bonzela (J. Brandon Hill), who believes they stole his money. The four jokers are on-the-run trying to hide from Johnny and his men, and before the ending, Roy breaks the fourth wall by admiting that Kabir played Double Dhamaal with them, the four friends will return and do Total Dhamaal with him in the third installment.

Double Dhamaal which released on 24 June 2011, was shot in Mehboob Studio, Mauritius and Hong Kong. At the 'Mahurat' of the film, it was announced that the four jokers, Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi, Aashish Chaudhary and Jaaved Jaaferi will be reprising their roles as friends again, while Sanjay Dutt plays a millionaire this time. The film focused on the four friends blackmailing Dutt to share all his fortune in the most hilarious ways they can think of. The film finished shooting early May 2011, and brought rights to remake the song "Oye Oye" from the 1989 action film, Tridev.[5] Earlier, actress Vidya Balan was chosen to play the role of Kamini, but reports suggest she refused and was subsequently replaced by Mallika Sherawat.

Critical reception

Unlike its predecessor, Double Dhamaal attracted mixed to mainly negative reviews from top critics in India. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama awarded the film 4/5 stars, saying that it is "seriously hilarious" and that "sometimes, a good laugh is all you need to make your day. Try not to miss this one, it pledges hilarity in abundance..."[6] Nikhat Kazmi from the Times of India gave the film 3/5 stars and said "This one's definitely not for the fastidious, choosy viewer but for those who don't mind losing it for a bit, Double Dhamaal works like an average Bollywood comedy. Performance-wise, it's one big circus with the guys hogging most of the limelight. The girls -- Mallika and Kangana -- are mere confetti."[7] Mayank Shekhar of the Hindustan Times rated the film with 1 out of 5 stars.[8] Shakti Salgaokar of DNA gave the movie a one and half stars and wrote in his review: "Indra Kumar’s recipe for double dhamaal is quite simple — sexual innuendo, potshots at popular films, bad mimicry, foreign locations, a generous dose of overacting, an item song and a gora villain. And as he magnificently presents the climax of the film (which is funny in parts but overall ends up being a damp squib) he leaves you with a threat of a sequel. Spare us the horror, please?."[9] Nikita Kapoor of FilmiTadka rated Double Dhamaal with 2 out of 5 stars and said - "In the end Double Dhamaal is a completely mindless, non-sense comedy, which is a sequel to 2007 film, Dhamaal. If the first one was Dhamaal, then this one was not an iota more than half Dhamaal."[10] Rachel Saltz of The New York Times wrote in her review: "The director, Indra Kumar, lets his baggy tale sprawl to 2 hours and 18 minutes and peppers it with references to other, better films and with movie talk in general. “All characters are fictitious,” someone says when the fools are caught scheming on camera, “and bear no resemblance to people living or dead.” In this case, all you can say is amen."[11]

Commercial reception

According to Box Office India, the film had a good opening of 60 - 70% collections. At a few multiplexes, such as, Spice Noida, E Square Pune and Wave Ludhiana, the film almost opened at a 100% response.[12] The film collected approximately INR 7.61 crore net on its first day, according to Box Office India. It is the third biggest opener of the year at That time , following Ready and Yamla Pagla Deewana. The film had a strong Saturday, collecting INR 8.08 crore net. The film's weekend collections amounted to INR 25.65 crore net.[13] The film grossed INR67 crore worldwide[2] and was declared as an semi-hit by Box Office India.
