February 7, 1966by its founder Hideo Fujimoto. Uniden became a well known brand in the '70s by manufacturing and marketing millions of CB radios, under the Uniden brand as well as popular private brand labels such as President and Bearcat.
During the 1980s, Uniden grew to become the worlds largest manufacturer of
cordless telephones in addition to television satellite equipment, mobile radios, advanced marine electronics and frequency scanners (the latter under brandname Bearcat).
Europe, it became successful in the telecommunications market with its introduction of 900 MHz cordless telephones and later on, DECT technology models. Canadian, as well as Australian operations have also been successful marketing corded and cordless telephones, GPS Navigation devices and 2-way radios under the Uniden brand.
Most cordless phones with the
Radio Shackbrand name are Uniden models that are sold under the Radio Shack brand.
Its actual line of business is in research and development, manufacturing and marketing.
Uniden Corporation operates globally, but the main commercial activities are situated in the
United States. Production sites have been located in China, Hong Kong, Taiwanand the Philippines. Uniden has also recently expanded its manufacturing to include Vietnam.
In its home market
Japan, Uniden sells many other items, such as crystal components, cosmetics and golf clubs. The company is embarking upon an expansion phase to include the manufacture of high quality liquid crystal display (LCD) televisions, digital cameras, digital receivers and GPS navigation systems.
