The Mughals, Aadils and in the time of
ShivajiMaharaj, Patil was the title given to a person who was granted a territory of land. The granted territory is usually referred to as the patilki or Watan. The patil was in effect the ruler of the territory, as he was entitled to the collected taxes. Many Patils were warriors in the Marathaarmy. Patil is lastname in Maratha( Land owners), Marathi Brahmins & people from Gujrath settled in North Maharashtra.
Among prominent Patils were the Royal
Bhonsle(or Bhosle) family. Shivaji Maharaj's grandfather Maloji Bhoslewas a patil of villages near Daund (in Pune). Other prominent Patils included the Royal Gaikwadfamily were patils of Lalvanin Malegaon Taluka, the Royal Shindefamily were patils of village Kanherkhed in Satara), and most royal clans are Patils. So Maharashtra was and is currently dominated by Maratha Patils.
