thymine dimer

thymine dimer
Dimer that can be formed in DNA by covalent linkage between two adjacent ( cis ) thymidine residues, in response to ultraviolet irradiation. Occurrence potentially mutagenic, although repair enzymes exist that can excise thymine dimers. See xeroderma pigmentosum.
