scavenger receptor

scavenger receptor
Structurally diverse family of receptors on macrophages that are involved in the uptake of modified LDL and have been implicated in development of atherosclerotic lesions. Six classes are recognized with different binding preferences. Macrophage scavenger receptors Class A bind a wide range of ligands, including bacteria and it is speculated that scavenger receptors may be important in recognizing apoptotic cells.
