Group of Gram negative bacteria, found mainly in soil. They are non-flagellated with flexible cell walls. They show a gliding motility, moving over solid surfaces leaving a layer of slime (myxo = slime). At some stage in their growth the cells of this group swarm together and form fruiting bodies and spores in a fashion similar to the slime moulds.
