- gene chip
An array of oligonucleotides immobilized on a surface that can be used to screen an RNA sample (after reverse transcription) and thus a method for rapidly determining which genes are being expressed in the cell or tissue from which the RNA came. There are two alternatives for the immobilized oligonucleotides: either a random set of defined sequences or known probes for genes (probes for cytokines, adhesion molecules etc.). In both cases the position on the chip defines the sequence that hybridizes.
