1) pertaining to the cheek or sides of the head, e.g. malar spines or thorns found in some male Rajidae close to the edge of the disk opposite the eye
2) supramaxilla (the dermal bone(s) on the upper side of the posterior end of the maxilla. Salmonidae have one supramaxilla while Sternoptychidae have two. Lost in more advanced Teleostei. Also called supramaxillary, surmaxilla, surmaxillary and jugal)
