Black oxide

Black oxide

Black oxide is a conversion coating for ferrous materials. It is used to add mild corrosion resistance and for appearance.Citation | title = What is Black Oxide? | url = http://www.clevelandblackoxide.com/what.aspx | accessdate = 2008-09-14.] cite book |last= Oberg |first= E. |coauthors= et al. |title= Machinery's Handbook |edition= 25th edition |year= 1996 |page = 1444 |publisher= Industrial Press Inc.] To achieve maximum corrosion resistance the black oxide must be impregnated with oil or wax.cite book |last= Oberg |first= E. |coauthors= et al. |title= Machinery's Handbook |edition= 25th edition |year= 1996 |page = 1442 |publisher= Industrial Press Inc.] One of its advantages over other coatings is its minimal buildup.

Process

A hot bath of sodium hydroxide, nitrates, and nitrites, at convert|285|F|C, [Citation | title = Black oxide FAQ | url = http://www.epi.com/black-oxide/blackoxide-faq.htm | accessdate = 2008-09-14.] are used to convert the surface of the material into magnetite (Fe3O4).

Cold black oxide

Cold black oxide is applied at room temperature. It is not a true oxide, but rather soft deposits that are not as effective as the hot version.
