Laurelwood is a farming community, with a population partially composed of retirees and former students and teachers of Laurelwood Academy.

In the 1990s, a plan for a housing development was proposed in the Laurelwood valley. Neighbors in the community defeated the proposal. Laurelwood is still mostly composed of homes situated on one to ten acres.
